Technical Operations Manager

Meridian Labs builds open source tools for evaluating and understanding AI models, including Inspect AI, Inspect Scout, Inspect Petri, and Inspect Flow. These tools are used by AI Security Institutes (AISIs) in the UK, US, EU, Japan, and Korea, and by research organizations such as METR, Apollo Research, Epoch AI, and Redwood Research.

We’re a small 501(c)(3) non-profit, and operations work is currently spread across our technical staff and leadership. We’re hiring our first Technical Operations Manager to take on much of that work. You’ll work directly with our CEO.

The work is split between internal operations and supporting our partnerships. Internally, you’ll make hybrid and remote work go smoothly for the team, keep our finances and systems in order, and use AI agents and scripts to automate reporting and oversight that we do by hand today. Externally, we work closely with AI Security Institutes, AI labs, and other non-profits, and you’ll own the operational side of those relationships: agreements, staff arrangements such as secondments, partner reviews and reporting, and joint visits and events.

Responsibilities

  • Run day-to-day finance: budgets, expenses, vendors, and tracking our spend on cloud services and model APIs
  • Make hybrid and remote work go well: our Boston coworking space, equipment and setup for remote staff, team communication, and regular in-person time together
  • Automate internal reporting and oversight, such as spend, usage, and access reviews, with AI agents and scripts, and keep those automations reliable
  • Administer the tools we run on: accounts and access, devices, Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub, and AI platforms, and keep their security settings in good shape
  • Manage agreements with partners, including government agencies, AI labs, and other non-profits, and arrangements for staff who work with them, such as secondments
  • Respond to partner security and data-handling reviews, and prepare the reporting our partners and funders require
  • Coordinate visits, workshops, and events with partners, along with team travel and offsites
  • Own compliance: annual non-profit filings, audits, insurance, and policies
  • Run people operations: hiring logistics, onboarding and offboarding, payroll and benefits administration, and contractor management
  • Support grant applications as we take on grant funding

Minimum Qualifications

  • Several years of experience in operations, IT, finance, or administration, ideally at a technical organization, research group, or early-stage company
  • Daily use of AI tools in your own work, and a record of using them to automate real tasks
  • Comfort with technical work: writing scripts, working with APIs and spreadsheets, and administering SaaS tools
  • Experience managing budgets, vendors, and contracts
  • Strong organizational skills: you track many open items at once and close them out
  • Clear, direct writing, and comfort working with engineers, researchers, and government partners

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building automations with AI agents such as Claude Code or Codex, or with tools such as Zapier
  • Experience supporting a hybrid or distributed team
  • Experience with compliance work such as security questionnaires or access reviews
  • Familiarity with US non-profit compliance, including annual filings and audits
  • Experience with US payroll and HR, and ideally with contractors or employees in the UK
  • Experience at an AI safety or AI research organization

If you don’t meet every qualification, we’d still like to hear from you.
