Member of Technical Staff, Engineering

Meridian Labs builds open source tools for evaluating and understanding AI models, including Inspect AI, Inspect Scout, Inspect Petri, and Inspect Flow. These tools are used by AI Safety Institutes in the UK, US, EU, Japan, and Korea, and by research organizations such as METR, Apollo, and Epoch.

We’re hiring engineers to work across these projects: the Python libraries researchers use to run evaluations, and the TypeScript and React apps they use to look at the results. Most of our engineers work on both. We’re a small team, so you will own large parts of the product and work directly with the people who use it.

Much of this work happens in direct collaboration with researchers at government AI Safety Institutes and other organizations that use our tools. You’ll see how your work gets used on real evaluations and hear quickly when something falls short.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and ship features in our Python packages and our web apps (Inspect View, Scout, Petri)
  • Own parts of the codebase end to end: design, implementation, tests, docs, and releases
  • Work with researchers at AISIs, labs, and non-profits to understand what they need, then build it
  • Review pull requests and work with outside contributors in our open source repos
  • Track down and fix problems that users report
  • Make our tools work well for AI agents as well as people

Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong Python or strong TypeScript and React, and willingness to work in the other
  • A record of shipping and maintaining software that other people depend on
  • Good judgment about scope: when to build something carefully and when a simple version is enough
  • Clear writing in code review, docs, and issues

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building tools for technical users, especially data-heavy interfaces or visualization
  • Experience maintaining open source projects
  • Familiarity with LLM APIs, agents, or model evaluation
  • Experience with Inspect AI or similar evaluation frameworks
  • Experience with containers, sandboxing, or cloud infrastructure

If you meet most of these but not all, we’d still like to hear from you. We’re hiring at senior and principal levels.
